    Standard Brakes

All Freedom Concepts bikes come standard with at least one braking method. Our small bikes are equipped with a front wheel brake (either caliper or V-brake style). Our larger bikes are equipped with both a front brake as well as rear brake (disc brake). There are multiple hand brake positions as we can place the lever on either the right handlebar, left handlebar, Rear Steer, or T-bar in some cases. When the bike is being used primarily for therapy and users have low safety awareness, the most common set-up is to mount the brake lever on the Rear Steer handle for attendant control.

    Locking Brake Handles

All Freedom Concepts brake handles have a push-pin locking system allowing for the brakes to be engaged and locked while transferring or not in-use.

    • Provides essential safety control for users with limited reaction time or reduced hand strength
    • Locking function improves stability during transfers and helps to keep the bike from moving during breaks

    Parking Brake

Every Freedom Concepts bike comes with a parking brake on the right rear wheel. It is a secure, high-stability brake designed to fully immobilize the bike. There is a simple lever to engage the brake, and it provides a reliable hold on flat and slightly sloped surfaces. For even greater stability during transfers, we recommend also engaging the locking hand brake(s). The parking brake can be installed on the left rear wheel as well if that is a preference versus the right-hand side.

    • Prevents unintended rolling during transfers, reducing risk of falls or strain for both user and caregiver
    • Especially important for users with mobility impairments who rely on stable surfaces during transitions
